Thursday, March 19th, 2009March Full Moon
Tuesday, March 10th, 2009This morning’s March Full Moon set at 6:53 AM, and tonights Moonrise is at 7:05pm PDT. It actually becomes full 33 minutes later, at 7:38 PM PDT.
Known by Native Americans as the Worm Moon, the March full moon is also known as the Crow Moon, Crust Moon, Sugar Moon, or Sap Moon.
The last 2 refer to the sap starting to run in the trees as spring approaches and the trees awaken from their winter slumber. Sugar maple trees are tapped at this time of year, the sap collected and boiled down to make maple syrup and maple sugar. The March full moon supplied light so these jobs could continue at night, as the Harvest Moon in the fall let farmers harvest their crops into the night.
