Carrizo Plain (Soda Lake) Photos

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

These photos were taken last Saturday (March 22) on the way to Carrizo Plain National Monument (Hwy 58) and around Soda Lake. My friends Larry and Rob and I decided to mountain bike around the lake (about a 20 mile trip) and catch some good wildflower photos.

Enjoy,

Katie

Here are some photos from my 22 mile mountain bike ride with my friend Rob. We started from Lopez Lake area and went up and over High Mountain to Pozo and back. The wildflowers were beautiful and bountiful. Truly a banner year for Shooting Stars and Lupine.

More Easter Sunday wildflower pictures

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

I received these from Chris:

Here are some more wild flower pictures taken on Easter. While driving up the grade on 101 out of SLO I noticed a large orange patch on the right hand side and was amazed when I figured out that it was made up of mostly California poppies. I’m new to the area and was taken back by the beauty of the spring bloom.

I had to hike for these pictures, but was not disappointed when I got to the sea of flowers.

Thanks,
Chris

Less than 10 minutes from snap to blog, here’s tonight’s full moon rise:

While I was waiting, I saw the Madonna Easter Cross on Cerro San Luis. This is Good Friday evening:

Full moon today

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Today’s moon became full today at 11:41 AM PDT. It rises at 7:34 PM PDT and sets tomorrow morning at 6:50 AM PDT.

Known by Native Americans as the Worm Moon, the March full moon is also known as the Crow Moon, Crust Moon, Sugar Moon, or Sap Moon.

The last 2 refer to the sap starting to run in the trees as spring approaches and the trees awaken from their winter slumber. Sugar maple trees are tapped at this time of year, the sap collected and boiled down to make maple syrup and maple sugar. The March full moon supplied light so these jobs could continue at night, as the Harvest Moon in the fall let farmers harvest their crops into the night.

Beware the Ides of March…

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

… if you are a Roman Emperor, anyway. Today is the 15th of March, 2008, the Ides of March.

from Wikipedia

In the Roman calendar, the term ides was used for the 15th day of the months of March, May, July, and October, and the 13th day of the other 8 months.[1].

In modern times, the term Ides of March (Latin Idus Martiae) is best known as the date that Julius Caesar was assassinated, in 44 BC, the story of which was famously retold in William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar. The term has come to be used as a metaphor for impending doom.
