Rising over the airport…

Rising over the airport…

I shot this last night, off the back deck looking out toward the airport, of the moon one night shy of full.

Tonight’s Full Buck Moon rises locally at 8:21 PM, (actually a little later due to the Santa Lucia Range to the east of SLO).
The July full moon is also called the Full Thunder Moon, Full Hay Moon, Full Mead Moon, Full Blood Moon, Full Summer Moon, Full Ripe Corn Moon, Full Crane Moon, or Full Rose Moon. If you are Celtic, it’s the Moon Of Claiming.
Last week, there was enough thunderstorm activity around the state and the west that I think I’d go with Full Thunder Moon.
The webcams have been down since Saturday morning due to problems in the AT&T cable that carries the T1 that serves them. The cable is bad under the street, and requires excavation to repair. The last estimate I had on repair completion was Wednesday evening. Apparently AT&T needs a permit from the City to shut the street down for the excavation.
I apologize, but this one is totally beyond my control.
If you live or work up the coast in the Cambria area, you might be interested in a new Cambria weather web site. There is a new weather station at the Fire Station on Lodge Hill, and its data is posted on a new website.
Check out fire.cambriacsd.org for current weather conditions, the forecast, and the fire weather indexes.
According to the SLO Sheriff’s Department, around 1:23 this afternoon, those booms were caused by military training flights from Edwards AFB in our area.
I called Cal Tech and they verified that there were no earthquakes at that time.
Here’s a GOES satellite image of the plume from the Zaca Fire. At least the smoke is headed away from San Luis Obispo for a while.

The birds attracted by our bird feeder have found the otter fountain on the back deck, and made it their own for bathing and drinking.
A hooded oriole…

Checking out the fountain…

Getting a drink…

The NWS has issued a Red Flag Warning for fire danger for parts of the SLOweather area.

The forecast also includes the possibility of lightning over the mountains.
This is just a small part of Red Flag Warnings covering a major portion of California and Nevada.

Today Katie and I hiked across the canyon to our Teddy’s Bridge Geocache GCRKWR and placed a Jeep Travel Bug JPHC8E in it.
At the cache site, the serpentine columbine was in bloom in the damp creek area.

Farther up the trail, there were lots of San Luis Obispo Mariposa Lilies still in bloom.

Coming back down the loop by the PG&E tower, some Club Haired Mariposa Lilies…

The hummies up here have been going through over a quart of nectar day. I shot this about 7:30 PM tonight. This is perhaps a quarter of the total that have been feeding up here. There’s just no way with a camera to capture the bee-like swarm.

If we forget and let the feeder go dry, they are very happy when we refill it.
