Poly Fire, first pics

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Saturday morning, 30 June 2007, there was vegetation fire on the hillside north of Grand Avenue, between the Poly “P” and 101.

At about 8:15 AM I was over in that area and took some pictures. The SLOweather fire scanner stream was popular, with as many as 9 of 10 possible listeners on line at once, and average listen times of well over an hour.

Looking north from the top of McCollum Street…

A hose lay up the hill, including a water tender to supply water to the truck with the pump.

A hand crew…

Tanker drop…

Tonight’s Full Strawberry Moon, over southeast SLO at about 8:30 PM…

At dusk, the hummingbirds are still feeding. I suppose because of the dry weather last winter there are not a lot of spring flowers left for them to feed on. Right now, they are draining a quart of sugar water nectar from our feeder every day, and sometimes all 6 feeder stations are occupied, with a couple other birds waiting their turns.

And, as I was going out on the back deck to snap the moon shot, I spooked this red fox scavenging bird seed from under our feeder…

June full moon tonight…

Friday, June 29th, 2007

In about 10 minutes, tonight’s June Full Strawberry Moon (in our timezone anyway) will rise over the mountains to the east of SLO. Considering the strawberry fields on the Central Coast, I think that’s most appropriate.

Other names for the June Full Moon are Full Rose Moon (which is also appropriate, based on the blooms on Katie’s container roses on the back deck :) ), Green Corn Moon, Windy Moon (yeah, that fits), Celtic Moon of Horses, and Neo Pagan Planting Moon.

And there it is…

Server move complete!

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

You may have noticed that SLOweather was down for a couple of hours on Thursday, before and after noon. We completed the move from our old server location to the new one in a Tier 1 co-location facility. You should notice faster load times and more stability.

The move isn’t quite complete. Sometime in the next 3 or 4 days the SLOweather downtown and airport cams will be off-line while those IP addresses are changed. However, while the cameras may be unavailable, the weather pages should still be available.

Thanks for your understanding,

Chris

Summer Solstice 2007- First Day Of Summer

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Summer begins today at 1:06 PM PDT. Today is the “longest day” of the year, more appropriately the day with the longest period of daylight. After today, the length of the daylight period again begins to lessen until the Winter Solstice on December 21st.

SLOweather is back…

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Saturday morning at ~3:40 AM, SW San Luis Obispo lost power. It wasn’t restored here until about 5 hours later. The outage took out our cable Internet connection, and seems to have damaged our local router, and the server on which SLOweather is hosted, located in a colo in this end of town.

We replaced the router as soon as power and internet service were restored. The server took a little longer, due to a bad power supply and some corrupted files.

I’ll be moving SLOweather to my own dedicated machine over the next few days, and to a new, more secure colo with more bandwidth, by the first of July.

Red Tailed Hawk

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Every evening this Red Tail has taken to stopping by the Monterey cypress tree that’s right behind the bird feeder, looking for a little snack.

I managed to catch him on the wing as he left the tree. Check out how the landing gear is stowed. Look at those talons…
